Annual Report 2022

Working across generations

Diversity means learning from each other

Demographic change is also reflected at HHLA. While the average age of employees at the German sites was 43 in 2015, it was already 45 in 2021. HHLA’s concepts for life-long learning, continuing education and health measures ensure that its employees stay fit – physically, mentally and professionally.

“I find the work in my team very rewarding, both on a personal and professional level. The younger colleagues bring in a breath of fresh air and we older colleagues help them with our wealth of experience. And everyone has their own personality and strengths.”

“Because of their many years of experience, the older colleagues can often teach you tricks you don’t learn during training. That’s a real help at work. And at the same time, I like the fact that the younger members of the team can also contribute knowledge that can be useful, for example about new technologies.”

Expertise is not a question of age. Companies benefit greatly when people from different generations collaborate. Mixed-age teams bring together people with different attitudes, interests and levels of experience. This interaction of personalities, practical experience and fresh, innovative ideas is exciting and rewarding.

Knowledge transfer is important. Older and younger employees can learn from each other because the experience levels of different operations vary greatly. HHLA is therefore promoting more and more mentoring activities – including “reverse mentoring”, as younger and older employees can all help each other.

Where possible, the company offers customised, flexible work models which respect people’s different time needs according to life stage, health care, parenting and family nursing.
