Equal opportunities

Diversity brings the best employees together

Social background still has a strong influence on educational and labour market opportunities. In many cases, people do not have equal access to resources such as networks, assets or education because of their social background. At HHLA, all people have the same chance of getting a job that matches their talents and capabilities.

“I was able to start an apprenticeship to become a mechatronics engineer at HHLA just three years after I arrived in Hamburg from Syria. HHLA has been super supportive and my colleagues in the team gave me an incredibly warm welcome. I look forward to coming to work every day.”

A person’s qualifications and personality, not their background or that of their parents, are decisive when it comes to bringing together the best employees. This is why HHLA has a structured selection procedure to ensure that only those applicants are hired who best meet the required profile.

In addition, the staff development programme “HHLA Learning” offers a range of continuing education opportunities. Employees engaged in industrial, technical or commercial activities receive continuous training to ensure they meet the requirement profile and continue their professional development. This guarantees equal opportunities regardless of their previous education background.

HHLA has successfully supported the “Hafen-Scouts” (or port scouts) project in Hamburg for many years now, making an active contribution to more equal opportunities in education for young people. Since 2015, primary school pupils from all districts of Hamburg have been given the opportunity to look behind the scenes at Germany’s largest seaport and experience how global trade works during their one-day excursions. The content is tailored to the curriculum of the classes taking part and prepared in detail at school beforehand with an in-depth follow-up after the trip.
