Intercultural collaboration

Diversity creates innovation by offering different perspectives

HHLA’s workforce is becoming increasingly international and diverse. The resulting linguistic and cultural knowledge is an enrichment for HHLA as these different ways of thinking and working, personalities and expertise strengthen every one of our teams. The more perspectives the better – because they promote innovation.

“HHLA has set up its own innovation unit called HHLA Next. This unit benefits in particular from the diversity of its teams: it is truly inspiring to see the different approaches and expertise that each person brings to the team. And it is this combination of factors that enables us to drive HHLA Next forward.”

HHLA actively seeks international professionals to enrich its workforce with fresh perspectives. A range of communication and training courses are held in English to promote diversity and strengthen ties between staff working in different fields. Likewise, HHLA helps non-native speakers of German to improve their language skills. We also provide English courses in various departments to facilitate communication.

HHLA employs people from around 40 different nations. This is why HHLA strengthens international collaboration and promotes cultural diversity in its teams.

As part of their practical, dual vocational training, young people doing an apprenticeship or university degree at HHLA are already given the opportunity to work or study abroad for a few weeks or to take part in an international volunteer project. Training courses aimed at increasing intercultural skills and breaking down prejudices and discrimination help raise awareness of cultural differences as well as similarities.

The HHLA Executive Board’s “policy statement on diversity and against racism” of 5 June 2020 underlines this commitment.
